WCB Issues Forestry Safety Video - December 2000
As one of its latest safety initiatives, the Workers Compensation Board of Prince Edward Island presented a forestry safety video today to Wanson Hemphill, who represents the PEI Forest Industry Association. The video, which was produced by the Workplace Health, Safety and Compensation Commission of New Brunswick (WHSCC), demonstrates various techniques and safety procedures for forest operations and is a beneficial tool in educating forestry workers. The video will be mailed to every forestry contractor on Prince Edward Island. Wanson Hemphill said he is pleased with the WCB forestry safety video. “The video shows how safety, technique and proper procedure can actually increase productivity in forest operations. For instance, if cutters use proper notches and hinges when bringing down trees, they are going to increase productivity. The same goes for well maintained equipment. If a crew is using properly sharpened chains along with wedges and felling levers, they are reducing risk for accidents, and at the same time are getting more done.” The WCB Occupational Health and Safety Director, George Stewart, explained that the video provides an opportunity to help prevent accidents. “Lets face it, forestry is a dangerous occupation. Within the last two weeks on Prince Edward Island there has been a life threatening accident occur in the woods. We must improve safety for workers and this involves education and training. This video shows how to work safely in the wood lot by utilizing escape routes and work plans. It also provides the necessary selection of safety equipment and demonstrates proper work techniques.” Carol Anne Duffy, the Workers Compensation Board’s Chief Executive Officer, stated the importance of creating safe working environments for Islanders. “Accidents are preventable, and it is part of our job to help employers take every reasonable precaution to ensure the health and safety of their employees. It is well known that improving safety and awareness fosters better overall work place productivity.” The Workers Compensation Board of Prince Edward Island, in partnership with work place parties, is committed to eliminating work place accidents.
