WCB Issues Winter Health and Safety Alert - January 2004
The Workers Compensation Board issued a hazard alert to remind workers, employers and the general public about some of the hazards associated with winter workplace activities. The awareness of workplace hazards is essential throughout the year, especially during the winter months. George Stewart, Director of Occupational Health and Safety for the Workers Compensation Board, stated that "slip and fall injuries are one of the most common types of injuries that occur during the winter months because of wet, icy and snowy conditions." He explained that "a slip and fall injury is a preventable injury and workers and employers should be aware of the dangers and what actions can prevent them." Some tips to help prevent slips and falls include the following:
Stewart also cautioned workers and employers about the improper removal of snow and ice from roofs which puts workers at risk of serious falls. As well, he stressed the need for workers to be aware of hazards such as frostbite and hypothermia which are associated with working in the outdoors. Jim Lee, Chair of Workers Compensation Board, said "it is important that workers and employers are aware of the dangers associated with winter weather and how these dangers can be avoided." A number of information materials have been developed to assist workers and employers in this regard, such as the Fall Protection Guide. Please see the Workers Compensation Board's website at www.wcb.pe.ca , or call 902-368-5697, or toll free in Atlantic Canada at 1-800-237-5049 for more information.
