The mandate of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Division of the Workers Compensation Board is to promote the development of healthy and safe workplaces. This is accomplished through education and enforcement of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

The philosophical foundation of the OHS Act is the Internal Responsibility System. This means that the people doing the work are responsible for creating a healthy and safe workplace. The division is committed to supporting associations, employers, workers and educators in the process of decreasing occupational accidents and illnesses on Prince Edward Island.

Divisional activities include:

  • Inspection of workplaces for compliance with the Act and regulations
  • Investigation of accidents and complaints
  • Education programs such as workshops, annual conferences and individual workplace sessions on requirements under the Act
