Youth video contest highlights the importance of working safely
Charlottetown, June 25, 2026– Porter Ludgate and Theo Hansen, Grade 10 students at Morell Regional High School are the winners of the Workers Compensation Board’s (WCB) annual “Focus on Safety” youth video contest. The creators of the winning entry receive a $1,000 cash prize and their high school also receives $1,000.   Porter and Theo’s winning video, Know the Hazards Work Safe, highlights key occupational health and safety principles with a focus on young workers, hazard awareness, and personal protective equipment (PPE).      View the video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQWHmIqVIr8    “The youth video contest is an engaging way to help young workers develop a safety-first mindset,” said Danny Miller, Director of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) at the WCB. “Porter and Theo’s video, Know the Hazards Work Safe, delivers important safety messages in a creative way that will resonate with both young and experienced workers. I also want to thank Sandy Gallant of Morell Regional High School for helping Porter and Theo with their submission. There are many teachers across the Island that support the youth video contest and help to strengthen workplace safety culture.”   Every year, the WCB challenges PEI students to show their understanding of workplace health and safety and to educate their peers, through an original drama, comedy, documentary, animation or music video. Regional winning entries are then entered in a national contest organized by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS).   To learn more about the WCB’s Youth Video Contest and resources for young workers, visit our website at wcb.pe.ca    To learn more about the CCOHS Youth Video Contest, visit their website at ccohs.ca.  Aussi disponible en français.
