March 18-24 is Poison Prevention Week
The Workers Compensation Board urges all Island workplaces to take time during Poison Prevention Week to consider the dangerous substances that may be encountered on the job.
"Poisoning, like any other type of workplace injury, is preventable", said Nancy Guptill, Workers Compensation Board Chair. "Know the hazards and what to do to address them before they cause harm."
The Workers Compensation Board recommends the following precautions when working with poisonous substances:
- Perform hazard assessments for all poisonous substances.
- Provide proper training for all those who work with poisons and revisit the training regularly.
- Ensure all controlled products are labelled and safety information is posted.
- Ensure first aid measures are in place.
- Wear appropriate protective equipment and clothing.
The Occupational Health and Safety Act outlines the legislated requirements for workplace safety on Prince Edward Island.
