If you work with contractors or subcontractors with hired workers, you should request a clearance letter from the WCB. The clearance confirms that the contractor’s account with WCB is in good standing. This is important because if the contractor’s account is in default, as the principal employer, you may be liable to pay assessments owed by the contractor and subcontractors.
Clearance makes sure that you’re protected, and that all employers carry their fair share of the cost of the compensation system.
You can request a clearance letter for your contractors or subcontractors through our Online Services or by contacting us.
You can also request a clearance letter to confirm your own WCB coverage.
You can learn more about WCB coverage and clearance in the Information for Employers Guide and in our WCB policies.
