The WCB may reimburse you for out-of-pocket expenses that result from approved medical services and return-to-work programs, such as:
- Transportation, meals, and accommodation.
- Medications and medical supplies. The WCB has a Direct Pay Prescription Drug Program so that you don’t have to pay for your prescription medications.
Do expenses need to be preapproved to be covered?
Yes. It is important that you contact your case manager to discuss reimbursement before paying out of pocket. All expenses must have prior approval from the WCB.
How do I request reimbursement?
Requests for reimbursement must be made within six months of the expense being incurred. A Worker's Expense Claim form must be completed. The form is available online or at the WCB office:
Workers Compensation Board
14 Weymouth Street
PO Box 757
Charlottetown PE C1A 7L7
You may also request a copy to be sent to you by contacting us at 368-5680 or toll free in Atlantic Canada at 1-800-237-5049.
Do I need to provide receipts?
Yes. Receipts are required for all expenses except meals and mileage. Receipts must be attached to the Worker's Expense Claim form.
What travel expenses are covered?
Travel expenses may include the following:
- Travel to medical appointments or an approved health care treatment/program. Please note, confirmation of attendance at the appointment or treatment/program must be received before reimbursement will be provided.
- Travel to a vocational rehabilitation program.
- Travel to a meeting arranged by the WCB.
- Meal allowances, when a medical treatment or a meeting arranged by the WCB exceeds four hours from the time that a worker leaves their residence until the completion of the medical treatment or meeting.
- When required, accommodations and bridge/ferry/toll fares.
If you use your own vehicle, the WCB will pay you a set amount for each kilometre you travel.
When are travel expenses not covered?
The WCB does not cover expenses for:
- Picking up prescriptions and medical supplies.
- Unscheduled visits to the WCB.
- Attending hearings with the Internal Reconsideration Officer or the Workers Compensation Appeal Tribunal (WCAT).
If you are unsure about coverage, you should contact your case manager and confirm eligibility.
Do I have to use my own vehicle to claim travel expenses?
In situations where a worker does not have their own motor vehicle, the worker is required to use the most appropriate and cost-effective mode of transportation.
Can I get a travel advance?
Yes. A travel advance may be given if the WCB approves out-of-province medical assessment or treatment. You must complete a Worker’s Expense Claim form after your travel is finished.
Are transportation costs covered while I am participating in a return-to-work program?
Yes. If you are participating in a return-to-work program and are receiving wage loss benefits, transportation costs will be reimbursed.
Will the WCB pay for someone to attend my medical appointments with me?
Yes, if it is medically necessary. If the injury is life-threatening, pre-approval may be waived. Attendant fees will be paid only when the attendant is a health professional and the services of a health professional are medically required.
Are there limits on what the WCB will reimburse?
Yes. The following expenses have limits:
- Mileage
- Meals
- Accommodations
- Travel for vocational rehabilitation
As outlined in our Travel and Related Expenses Policy (POL-03), the WCB reviews reimbursement rates for mileage, accommodations, and meals each year. Any approved rate increases take effect on August 1st of that year.
